Important Message for Stanley Customers Considering VoIP or Digital Phone Service

Please be aware there are many challenges in getting security systems to operate correctly with VoIP or digital phone service. Since Stanley’s priority is your security and safety, Stanley recommends keeping a standard telephone landline in service for your monitored security system. If you wish not to keep a standard telephone line active, Stanley offers a number of affordable options for maintaining the integrity of your monitored security system.

Below are some frequently asked questions about VoIP and digital phone service.

What is VoIP or Digital Phone Service?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and digital phone services provide voice communication over a private (telephone or cable company) or public (Internet) network, where voice communication is converted to digital data, transmitted over the network and then converted back to voice communication.

Will Signing-up for VoIP or Digital Phone Service Cause Any Problems with My Security System?

If you keep your standard telephone line connected to your security system, there should be no problem. However, canceling your standard telephone line and connecting your security system to a VoIP or digital phone service may cause alarm transmission issues.

What Are the Typical Problems That Occur When Connecting a Security System to a VoIP or Digital Phone Service?

Common problems can include, but not be limited to:

  • Incompatibility between the VoIP or digital equipment and the security system, which prevents the security system from sending alarm signals to the monitoring center
  • The inability of the monitoring center to connect to the security system via the VoIP or digital phone service for remote programming purposes
  • VoIP or digital telephone adapter equipment outages during a power failure
  • Network outages

All these problems can cause a security system to not function properly and/or not send a signal to the monitoring center.
